This imposing Moroccan door was hand crafted in Fez using wood planks. It is beautifully carved with intricate details of floral and geometric patterns in the Moorish, Arabesque style. This door has a unique patina, designs in the front and back, can be used functionally as a door, or as a bold wall piece. This a a "Dutch door" and can divided horizontally in such a fashion that the bottom half may remain shut while the top half opens. The initial purpose of the door design was to keep animals out of farmhouses, or keep children inside, while allowing light and air to filter through the open top. When the top half was open they also allowed a breeze, but stopped the wind from blowing dirt into the house. Moorish influenced designs have been used for centuries decorating the ceilings and wall panels of mosques and palaces in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
