Biography
Joseph Tozo was born in 1960 and came of age at Tengenenge — the extraordinary sculptural community in Mashonaland Central that Tom Blomefield established in the late 1960s on his former tobacco farm. Tengenenge became a rural community where sculptors from across Zimbabwe lived and worked together, surrounded by the bush and the animals of the Mashonaland plateau.
The Tengenenge environment shaped Tozo’s artistic sensibility profoundly. Surrounded by the natural world — the animals, birds, and landscape of the plateau — he developed an intimate observation that has remained the central subject of his work. His sculptures are technically rigorous but carry an almost ethnographic specificity: not a generic animal but a particular creature, observed over years.

Historical Context
Tengenenge’s influence on Zimbabwean sculpture is difficult to overstate. By the late 1970s it had become a self-sustaining artistic community with its own aesthetic character — rawer and more expressionistic than the Workshop School, less concerned with formal refinement and more with primal force. Visitors from around the world came to buy directly from the sculptors, creating one of Africa’s earliest direct-to-collector art markets.
Tozo’s animal subjects connect him to a deep tradition in Shona culture, where particular animals carry spiritual and totemic significance. His sculptures operate at the threshold between the observable natural world and the spirit world, and his choice of leopard rock — one of the hardest stones in the Zimbabwean repertoire — allows him to hold fine detail across complex surface forms.
