Nearly four feet tall and only five inches wide, "Family" rises like a column. At its base, two children nestle side by side in one pocket of exposed, polished stone. Above them, the mother and father each hold a cavity of their own, their dark forms winding up the length of the piece.
Everything around the figures is left as the stone was found, rough and pale, so the polished family reads as life held inside rock. The piece carries the full range of color spring stone is known for, black, white, gray and orange, all drawn from one block of the Zimbabwean ground.
