The Dogon, a people of the central plateau region of Mali, are among the oldest surviving groups in Africa and are well know for their wood sculpting. The Dogon Ladder, a functional piece of sculpture, was used to access their homes which were built into the sides of sandstone cliffs. While no longer functional, the ladder retains its sculptural qualities and natural patina making it a prized piece of Dogon art. The ladder was created by carving wedges into tree trunks that fork at the top. The notches serve as footholds, while the fork at the top stabilizes the ladder. Comes complete with custom stand.
