York's Shona Gallery presents the "Star of David Mask," an incredibly rare mask from the Ivory Coast. It has a long, tapered face that is crowned with pointed horns, and a Star of David is etched on the front. The 39” tall surface is a weathered silver, with warm red-orange wood showing through.
The mask depicts the diaspora of Jewish people to Africa, per the Star of David symbol etched on the front. Contrary to popular belief, the Jewish community has a presence in the Ivory Coast. The capital city of Abidjan has two synagogues, each with a population of about 40 to 70 congregants. In addition, large groups of indigenous peoples referred to as Danites claim descent from the lost tribe of Dan, and many from this ethnic group have shown interest in Judaic practices.
This lightweight mask can be easily mounted to the wall or mounted on a custom made mask stand that is included with your purchase.
