The child sleeps face down, one hand flat against the rock, and the raw stone rises over the small body like a blanket pulled up in the night. Ngoni Chandigwa polished the face, arm and feet in dark stone and left everything else as nature made it, so the piece reads less like a figure on a rock than a figure held by one.
Chandigwa works in spring stone, his favorite, and says it lets him express his inner feelings and his observations of Shona life. His award winning work lives with collectors in France, Germany, Australia, the UK, Canada, the US and Singapore.
The piece runs 16 inches long and 6 inches tall.
