York's Shona Gallery presents the Juju Hat. Unlike all other Juju Hats on the market, this piece is made from 100% Genuine Ostrich Feathers and is hand made in South Africa. This piece is known as a Juju Hat in its place of origin, Cameroon. The Bamileke tribe used them as traditional ceremonial headdresses. Today, they adorn homes as contemporary wall hangings.
For hundreds of years, the Bamileke tribe have been creating Juju hats for their tribal chiefs, royal families and dignitaries to wear during tribal ceremonies. The hats are significant when an elder dies as it is passed down to the next in line who may inherit the wealth and standing of the person that has died.
Modern interior designers decorate walls with juju hats to create a focal point and conversation starter for your home. Juju hats are ideal to hang on the wall over your bed, mantle piece, sofa, flat screen TV or simply an empty space on the wall.
Juju Hats take 2-3 days to make by hand, are made during the dry months of the year so the grass and feathers can dry before weaving. The grassy cloth base of the hats are delicately woven to create a strong backing for the wood slats which run up the sides creating a large circular platform for all the cured and dyed feathers which are then fitted one at a time to create the beautiful textured Juju Hats which are so appealing.
This unique piece was hand made in South Africa. No factories or machinery was involved in the production process, only artisans and hand tools with painstaking detail and precision. This piece is made out of natural materials and is free from any fillers, dyes, stains, or varnishes. There is ONLY ONE piece in existence--truly one of a kind.
