"The Mozambique Chair" is a one of a kind, hand-carved chair made from one piece of wood. It beautifully and abstractly captures the female form, expressed by statuesque features on the face, and a long braid in the hair. It has three legs and is generally upright in style with geometric incised design and sometimes a head surmounting the backrest. This represents an ancestor who may be called upon for protection, prosperity, or good luck. This unique chair is made by the Makonde peoples, an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. It is both functional and decorative.
This unique piece was hand made by the Makonde peoples of Tanzania. No factories or machinery was involved in the production process, only artisans and hand tools with painstaking detail and precision. This piece is made out of natural materials and is free from any fillers, dyes, stains, or varnishes. There is ONLY ONE piece in existence--truly one of a kind.
