Coster Balakasi embarked on his sculptural journey in 1988 during a school holiday with other famous artists including Miger Padaso, Dominic Benhura in Tafara, Zimbabwe. In 1993, Balakasi started sculpting in Harare (the capital of Zimbabwe) with the artist Cosmos Michener. Balakasi served as Minchener’s assistant artist until 1998, when he started working independently.

Incredibly, just one year later, Balakasi was chosen for artistic residency at the famous Chapungu Sculpture Park. That same year, he exhibited internationally in the United Kingdom. He has since exhibited in Zimbabwe, Spain, and the United States.

What is Shona?
The best of Zimbabwe stone sculpture combines the splendor and solidity of the stone medium with imagery drawn from reality and abstracted into symbolic form. Figures and features that are reminiscent of, yet not quite like, animal, and human forms suggest the creatures and mythological beings that inhabit the realms of the religions and folklore of the Zimbabwean people.
