Pfungwa Dziike carves women. He is celebrated for his abstract figures of mothers, of women with babies on their backs, of women carrying water, and "Sweet Girl" sits among them with her round head tilted and one wide eye open to the world, fine combed lines running down her back like braided hair.
Dziike was born in Mutare in 1972 and was raised by his grandmother, a maker of clay pots who passed down the Shona stories that still move through his work. The piece is 24 inches of dark spring stone, edged in warm brown where the surface has been cut back.
