Details & Materials
Most of this stone is exactly as it came out of the ground. The sculptor known as N.V.M. left the boulder rough and brown on every side, then opened a single hollow and polished a figure into it: a woman in black stone, head veiled, arms falling softly.
Walk around the piece and she disappears. Stand before the opening and she is suddenly there. That is the whole idea of "Hidden," and it is why the piece rewards a spot where people move past it. The boulder is 22 inches tall and carved from spring stone.

The stones we carry
Spring stone
Dense and very hard, it polishes to a deep, glassy black and weathers to pale grey where it is left raw
Serpentine
The most varied of Zimbabwe's stones, from olive green and brown to pink, rust and almost black, often within a single block
Lepidolite
A softer stone in shades of lilac and violet that glints in the light, prized for its rare color
