Joseph Chigangaidze gives detail to one part of the body only: the hands, the instrument of prayer. A single hand spreads across the chest while the head bows sideways into a rough, unpolished sweep of stone, and every other surface is smoothed into quiet black planes. That one choice carries the whole subject.
Chigangaidze is a renowned Zimbabwean sculptor who casts his fingerprint on his art through abstraction, trimming away everything that does not serve the feeling. Carved from spring stone, "Prayer" is 24 inches tall and sits well in an indoor or outdoor space.
