Denny Kanyemba dresses this figure in nothing but line. Long grooves sweep down and across her slender body like folds of fabric, gathering toward the hem, while the crown of her head is left as raw stone. She is just over two feet tall and barely four and a half inches wide, a quiet vertical presence.
Kanyemba was born in Harare in 1973 and began sculpting in 1987, while still in school, drawing early inspiration from Nesbit Mukomberanwa and Moses Masaya. His dedication to Shona cultural heritage has earned the respect of senior artists, galleries and collectors, and his work is often shown beside that of Zimbabwe's great sculptors.
